HOW LONG DOES A MERCURY UPS LAST ON A FULL CHARGE?
Quick Answer
A Mercury UPS holds your equipment for 5 to 10 minutes at a true 100% load, and roughly 10 to 25 minutes at half load. Those minutes are the whole value. The changeover happens within milliseconds, so a properly sized UPS will normally keep your PC, decoder and CCTV system running without interruption while power settles or your generator starts.

Every week somebody calls us surprised that their new UPS held for seven minutes. Sound familiar? Those seven minutes are doing more work than they look. The battery inside a desktop UPS is a small sealed lead-acid cell, usually 12V 8.2Ah or 12V 9Ah, kept compact so the unit stays affordable, wall-friendly and easy to service. Compare it to the 200Ah deep cycle battery in an inverter system: different chemistry, different job, different machine.
So the answer to how long does a Mercury UPS last is: long enough to save your file, park your CCTV recording, and shut the machine down properly, every single time NEPA blinks. For the hours after that, you add an inverter.
WHY A UPS IS BUILT FOR MINUTES, NOT HOURS
Three design choices set UPS runtime, and each one buys you something:
- The speed comes from the electronics, not the battery. A UPS switches quickly because its transfer circuitry and inverter are designed to respond within milliseconds. The Mercury UPS 850 Maverick, for example, lists a 12V 9Ah battery and a 2 to 6ms transfer time as two separate specifications. The internal battery is kept small to make the unit compact, affordable and easy to maintain. That small battery is why a desktop UPS delivers minutes rather than hours, not why it switches quickly.
- Heavy current draws down a small cell quickly. Pull 600W out of a 9Ah cell and you get closer to half of the 108Wh, not all of it. Engineers call this the Peukert effect. It is why runtime climbs sharply the moment you take load off, and why sizing one class above your actual draw pays for itself.
- The unit is tuned for switchover, and that is the hard part. Whether you choose a line interactive UPS or a true online double conversion UPS, the engineering goes into catching the cut cleanly, every time, for years. That is the part a generator cannot do and an inverter does more slowly.

These are realistic engineering estimates for new, fully charged batteries under normal operating conditions. Actual runtime varies with connected load, battery age, temperature and state of charge.
Note also that “half load” means half the wattage column, not half the VA. A Mercury UPS 1050 at half load is carrying about 315W, which in practice is a desktop, a monitor, a router, and a decoder. Push past that and you are back to single-digit minutes.
The Mercury Elite 3000VA Pro is a 3000VA line-interactive UPS with modified sine wave output and a brief transfer time. It is not the same product as the Mercury 3kVA Online UPS, which uses true online double conversion technology, pure sine wave output and zero transfer time. HOW TO CALCULATE MERCURY UPS RUNTIME YOURSELF
Do not take anybody’s word for it, including ours. Work it out. The formula is the same one used for inverter sizing, just with much smaller numbers:
For a UPS, “usable fraction” is where people go wrong. A deep cycle inverter battery gives you about 80% of its rating. A small sealed UPS battery being drained hard gives you far less, roughly 50% at full load and around 65% to 70% at light load. Inverter efficiency sits at about 85%.
Worked example: Mercury UPS 1050 carrying a 300W desktop
- Battery energy: 12V x 9Ah = 108 watt-hours
- Usable at this discharge rate: 108 x 0.65 = 70 watt-hours
- After inverter losses: 70 x 0.85 = 59.5 watt-hours
- Runtime: 59.5 ÷ 300 = 0.198 hours, which is about 12 minutes
Now run the same unit at its full 630W rating and the usable fraction collapses to about 50%. That gives you 108 x 0.5 x 0.85 = 45.9Wh, divided by 630W, which is under 5 minutes. Same battery, same UPS, less than half the runtime. That is the entire story of UPS backup in one calculation.

You will sometimes see 15 to 25 minutes quoted for this unit. That figure describes a lighter 200W to 300W load, which is how most people actually use it, rather than a true 315W half load. Both numbers are honest, they just answer different questions.

THE BIG ONLINE UNITS: 2KVA TO 30KVA
Once you cross into the online double conversion range, two different things happen depending on which family you buy, and that difference decides whether you get minutes or hours.
The MP PRO single phase towers come with their batteries included. The 3kVA carries 8 x 12V 7Ah on a 96Vdc bus. The 6kVA and 10kVA ship with 20 VRLA blocks as standard, with 16 or 18 also settable. You plug them in and they work out of the box, and Mercury publishes a figure for the 3kVA: 5 minutes at full load, 12 minutes at half load. That is the same order of magnitude as a desktop UPS, because the internal blocks are physically small. What you gain over a desktop unit is zero transfer time and a pure sine wave, not extra hours.
Envy battery architecture varies by model. The 2kVA Envy includes 4 x 12V 9Ah internally and can accept optional external modules. The larger Envy units and the three phase frames run on an external bank that you specify at the point of order: ±96 / ±108 / ±120Vdc on the Envy machines, 360V to 480Vdc on the three phase ones. Change the Ah rating of those blocks and you change the runtime by an order of magnitude without touching the UPS itself. This is where a UPS stops being a shutdown device and starts replacing a generator.
On the MP PRO single phase units the batteries are in the price, so the question to ask is what Ah those 20 blocks are, because that is what sets your runtime. On the larger Envy rack mounts and the three phase frames, the machine and the long-run battery bank are separate line items. A 10kVA Envy frame quoted bare and the same frame quoted with a 200Ah cabinet are separated by hours of backup and by millions of naira. Get the battery specification in writing either way. This is the single most common source of disappointment on large UPS orders.

A 40kVA three phase unit sits above these at ₦9,971,000, and the EP series scales to 800kVA on request. At that end of the range nothing is bought off a price list anyway, so treat those as starting points for a site survey rather than shelf prices.
The same UPS, four different runtimes
This is the table that actually answers the question. Below is a 6kVA online frame at 4.8kW, running four different battery banks on a 20 block, 240V string. The top row is close to what a compact included string delivers. The rows below it are what becomes possible once you move to a proper external cabinet, which is an Envy or three phase conversation rather than an out-of-the-box MP PRO one. Note also that the Envy 6kVA is a different machine rated at 5.4kW, so its figures shift slightly. The numbers use the same formula from earlier, with VRLA capacity derated for discharge rate and 92% online inverter efficiency.
Illustrative runtime using a 20 x 9Ah battery configuration. Mercury confirms that 20 VRLA blocks are included with the 6kVA and 10kVA MP PRO units, but the Ah rating is not published and market specifications show both 8.2Ah and 9Ah in circulation. Scale the load and the pattern holds. The 10kVA at its full 8kW gives roughly 4 to 6 minutes on a 20 x 9Ah string, about 1.5 hours on 20 x 100Ah, and close to 4 hours on 20 x 200Ah. The 30kVA three phase on a 32 battery, 384Vdc bank gives roughly 25 to 30 minutes on 100Ah blocks and around 1.5 hours on 200Ah blocks at full output. Halve the load in each case and the runtime more than doubles, because a gentler discharge also recovers capacity the Peukert effect would otherwise eat.
Two 30kVA Mercury variants are in circulation. The current three phase unit is specified at an output power factor of up to 0.9, which puts it at 30kVA / 27kW, and the figures above are calculated on that basis. An older EP30K rated 30kVA / 24kW also trades in the Nigerian market and will run roughly 15% longer on the same bank. Quote the model code on your order so the battery bank is sized against the right number.

So is a 10kVA online UPS a substitute for an inverter?
For a business, increasingly yes, but only if you specify it that way. Straight out of the box on its included blocks, a 6kVA or 10kVA MP PRO gives you minutes, not hours. Put a 100Ah or 200Ah external cabinet behind a 6kVA or 10kVA online frame and you have a machine that carries a clinic or a bank branch straight through an outage with zero transfer time and ₦0 petrol or diesel burned. Sensitive equipment never sees a flicker, which is the whole point of double conversion. The upgrade is the battery bank, not the UPS.
This requires a UPS model designed for long-run external batteries. The DC bus voltage, battery count, charger current, protective devices and expected recharge time must all be confirmed for the exact model before connecting a large battery cabinet. A very large bank behind an undersized charger can take an impractical length of time to recharge, which quietly defeats the purpose in an area with frequent outages. What an online UPS does not normally provide is direct solar panel input. It recharges its battery bank from an AC source such as NEPA or a compatible generator. WHAT ACTUALLY EATS YOUR MERCURY UPS RUNTIME
1. Connected load, the biggest variable by far
Plug a workstation pulling 500W into a Mercury UPS 1050 rated 630W and you get a few minutes. Plug in only a 15W internet router and that same UPS may run for an hour or longer, depending on inverter self-consumption, battery condition and the unit’s no-load shutdown setting. Nothing else on this list comes close to load in terms of impact, which is why buying one size above your real draw is the cheapest runtime you will ever buy. 2. Battery age and heat
Sealed lead-acid batteries degrade whether you use them or not. A brand new Mercury UPS delivers its full rated backup, but after 2 to 3 years of daily cycling, especially in an unventilated Lagos office where ambient temperature sits above 30 degrees, capacity can fall by half. Heat is the silent killer here. As a general VRLA rule of thumb, sustained operation around 10 degrees above the rated 25C reference temperature can reduce expected service life by roughly half. When runtime falls sharply but the UPS otherwise operates normally, the battery may need replacing rather than the complete UPS. 3. State of charge when the light goes
A fully drained Mercury UPS needs 6 to 8 hours on mains power to recover to about 90% capacity. In areas where NEPA gives you three hours on and five hours off, your UPS may never see a full charge, so every outage starts from a partial tank. If your grid supply is that unstable, a UPS alone is not the answer.
4. Load creep
The setup you sized the UPS for in January is rarely the setup running on it in August. A second monitor here, a printer there, a phone charger somebody plugged in “just for a minute.” Audit the sockets on the back of your UPS every few months. Printers and laser devices in particular should never share a UPS with a PC, since their warm-up surge can trip the whole unit.
UPS VERSUS GENERATOR VERSUS INVERTER: THE HONEST COST PICTURE
As of early August 2026, market reports put NNPC petrol in Lagos around ₦1,265 per litre, after a ₦35 reduction from the previous rate. Fuel prices now move quickly, so the exact pump price may differ by location and week, but the direction is clear: every extra hour on generator is becoming more expensive.

The inverter still needs to be charged from NEPA, solar, or another energy source, so it is not free power. What it removes is the daily petrol burn that makes generator backup so punishing.
How the charging figure is worked out: a 400W essentials load for six hours a day is 72kWh of usable power a month. Allowing for inverter conversion and battery round trip losses, roughly 100kWh has to come off the grid to replace it. Band A tariffs run between ₦206 and ₦225 per kWh depending on your DisCo and feeder classification, which lands the monthly charging bill between about ₦20,000 and ₦23,000. Heavier daily use, or cycling the bank close to empty every day, pushes it higher. The generator column assumes 0.8 litres per hour over the same six hours at ₦1,265 per litre.
NEED HOURS INSTEAD OF MINUTES? BUY AN INVERTER, NOT A BIGGER UPS
This is the part most people skip, and it is the part that saves them money. Going up a UPS size buys you more watts, not more hours. An inverter system flips the ratio. The electronics are modest, the batteries are enormous, and they are built for deep discharging every single day. Here is the same runtime formula applied to a proper battery bank:
Two 12V 200Ah batteries wired in series give you 24V at 200Ah, not 24V at 400Ah. Series doubles the voltage and leaves amp-hours alone. Parallel doubles the amp-hours and leaves voltage alone. Getting this backwards is how people end up buying half the battery bank they actually needed.

HOW TO SQUEEZE MORE MINUTES OUT OF YOUR MERCURY UPS
- Unplug the passengers. Printers, scanners, desk fans, and phone chargers do not belong on a UPS. Move them to a surge strip and give the whole battery to your PC.
- Give it air. Do not box the unit inside a cabinet or push it flush against a wall. Heat is what kills the battery, and a cooler battery holds more charge for longer.
- Let it charge fully. After any deep discharge, leave it on mains for 6 to 8 hours before you rely on it again.
- Test the switchover monthly, not the whole battery. Disconnect mains power for one or two minutes under a controlled, non-critical load to confirm the UPS transfers correctly. Do not completely drain the battery every month. Run a full runtime test only when you need one, preferably no more than once every six months, and let the battery recharge fully afterwards.
- Replace the battery, not the UPS. The UPS electronics will often outlast the original battery. When runtime falls sharply but the unit otherwise operates normally, replacing the battery may be more economical than replacing the complete UPS. Why does my Mercury UPS only last 5 minutes?

Should I buy a bigger UPS or an inverter for long backup?
For ordinary home or office backup measured in hours, choose an inverter system. A larger desktop UPS increases the wattage it can carry but not the hours it can carry it for, because the internal batteries stay compact by design. How long does a Mercury 30kVA online UPS last?
The 30kVA three phase unit runs a 360V to 480Vdc battery bank, which is roughly 30 to 40 12V blocks. On the current 0.9 power factor specification the unit is rated 30kVA / 27kW, and at that full output you can expect around 25 to 30 minutes on 100Ah blocks and roughly 1.5 hours on 200Ah blocks. At half load those figures more than double. Note that an older EP30K rated 30kVA / 24kW is also in circulation and runs about 15% longer on the same bank, so confirm your model code. Because the bank is specified per site, the only reliable number comes from sizing against your actual load schedule.
Can a large online UPS replace an inverter for a business?
For many businesses, yes, though not on the batteries it ships with. A Mercury 6kVA or 10kVA online UPS paired with a correctly sized external battery bank can carry critical equipment through an outage with zero transfer time and no petrol or diesel burned by the UPS itself. The limitation is that an online UPS does not normally accept direct solar panel input. It recharges from an AC source such as NEPA or a compatible generator.
