How to use the Mercury Battery Backup Calculator

The Mercury Battery Backup Calculator is designed to help you determine how  long your inverter battery or bank of batteries will last on a full charge.    


Step 1: Battery Amp/Hrs

In the first field use the slider to select the total Amp/Hrs of your battery or bank of batteries.  For example If you are using a 12v inverter with two 200ah 12v Deep Cycle batteries,move the slider to 400.  Two 12v batteries connected in parallel equals 12 volts and 400 Amp/Hrs.

If you are using a 24v inverter with two 200ah 12v Deep Cycle batteries,move the slider to 200.   Two 12v batteries connected in series equals 24 volts  and 200 Amp/Hrs.  If you are using a 48v inverter with four  200ah 12v Deep Cycle batteries, move the slider to 200.  Four 12v batteries connected in series equals 48 volts and 200 Amp/Hrs.


Step 2: Inverter Voltage

In the second field select the voltage of your inverter.  For example if you are using a Mercury 1.2kva (Classic Model) select 12v.  If you are using a Mercury 2.4kva (Classic Model) or a 3kva (Mercury Soho) inverter select 24v and if you are using a Mercury 5kva (Mercury Soho) inverter select 48v.


Step 3: Load


In the third field enter the total wattage of appliances connected to the inverter.  You can find the wattage of each item by looking at markings on the body, in the user manual or with the help of a watt meter.


Step 4: Backup Hours

In the fourth field the Mercury Battery Backup Calculator will tell you how many hours you can expect your inverter to run till the battery or bank of batteries reach an 80% depth of discharge.

Amazing Nigerians burn away 5 billion on generators annually. According to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara lawmakers are reviewing some of Nigeria’s energy laws to offer a proper legal framework that would help renewable energy to the benefit of the economy.

Renewable energy is a source of clean energy which is environment-friendly and is crucial to the economy of the future. We can only be self-sufficient in the energy field when we combine all our energy resources such as the wind, solar, hydro, biomass, biofuel, landfill, sewage gas, solid waste, geothermal energy, ocean energy among others. The proper legal framework to exploit renewable energy which is nature’s gift to humanity is non-existent in Nigeria.

Nigeria is a country with enormous resources and untapped opportunities.   To meet its full potential experts in the power sector estimate that Nigeria will require an investment of at least 3.5 billion dollars annually in power generating capacity, with large investments required in the other supply chain of transmission and distribution networks.

Mr Babatunde Fashola, Minister for Power, Works and Housing, said in a lecture that the Federal Government’s road map for solving the country’s power crisis was to utilise incremental power wherever it could be found to achieve steady power supply.

In a bid to improve power generation, supply and distribution, the Federal Government signed a Solar Power Purchase Agreements worth 1.75 billion dollars with 14 companies to build 1,125 megawatts capacity of renewable power across the country. The Minister for Power, Works and Housing elucidated that the incremental power project of the Federal Government is the development of hydro power through the construction and rehabilitation of several hydro power dams in the country.

In addition, some of the ongoing power projects include the 30-megawatt Gurara hydro power plant in Kaduna, 10-megawatt Tiga dam hydropower plant in Kano, 10-megawatt Oyan dam hydro power plant in Osun and 8-megawatt Challawa dam hydropower plant in Kano.

There are reports that NEPA power supply has been stable in many areas of Lagos for the last few months. We have however been here before, such as in the early days of the Muhammadu Buhari government. The power supply from NEPA was constant, the price of generators and inverters were falling. The masses were hopeful that the hell they had lived in was coming to an end. What transpired in Nigeria since then has been hell times two. Flooding Causes Power Outages In Ikoyi Victoria Island. Eko Electricity Distribution Company on Sunday 9th July 2017 announced power outages in Ikoyi, Victoria Island and surrounding areas because some of their injection substations and equipment have been submerged in flooding.

The General Manager, Corporate Communications, EKEDC, Mr Godwin Idemudia, said they were having challenges in almost all its injection substations, as a result of the flood from Saturday’s heavy rains.

He said that the management had directed that transmission is ‘deloaded’ in the affected areas for safety.

The injection substations affected by the flood include Lekki Transmission Station, Agungi, Lekki, Ademola and Anifowoshe.

Victoria Garden City, Water Front, Maroko and Oniru Injection Stations are completely out.

“”We need to look at the extent of the effect of the flood on our equipment.

“However, we are presently working round the clock to restore supply to our esteemed customers,” he said.

WARNING! To connect the inverter to a fuse box engage the services of a qualified electrician, with extensive experience of connecting inverters to NEPA.

WARNING! It’s very important for system safety and efficient operation to use
appropriate external battery cables. To reduce the risk of injury, external battery cables
should be UL certified and rated for 75 C or higher. Do not use copper cables
less than lOAWG. Below is the external battery cable reference according to system


CAUTION! Do not disassemble the inverter. Contact a Mercury Service Centre
when service or repair is required.

WARNING! Provide ventilation to outdoors from the battery compartment. The battery enclosure should be designed to prevent accumulation and concentration of hydrogen gas at the top of the compartment.

CAUTION! Careful to reduce the risk or dropping a metal tool on the batteries. It could
spark or short circuit the batteries and could cause an explosion.

CAUTION! Remove personal metal items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces, and
watches when working with batteries. Batteries can produce a short circuit current
high enough to make metal melt and could cause severe burns.

CAUTION! Avoid touching eyes while working near batteries.

CAUTION! Have plenty of fresh water and soap nearby in case battery acid contacts
skin, clothing, or eyes.

CAUTION! NEVER smoke or allow a spark or flame in the vicinity of a battery.
CAUTION! If a remote or automatic generator start system is used, disable the
automatic starting circuit or disconnect the generator to prevent an accident during servicing.

NOTE: Before installation, inspect the unit and be sure that nothing inside the package is damaged.

Step 1

A qualified electrician should create a NEPA only charging socket for the inverter.   The charging socket needs to be NEPA only, so the inverter does not feedback on itself.

Step 2

From the fuse box, a qualified electrician should separate the intended inverter load from the load which will be powered by NEPA and Gen only e.g AC, fridge and kitchen sockets.

Step 3

Confirm that the inverter is switched off.  Connect the inverter to an external battery bank

c: – Tight the battery cables with the M5 nuts. Do NOT place anything between the
flat part of the battery terminal and the battery cable ring terminal, or overheating

Step 4

Plug the inverter load into one of the AC output sockets on the back of the inverter.

Step 5

Plug in the AC input cord to the NEPA only wall outlet. The unit will automatically charge the connected external battery bank even though the unit is off.

Mounting the Unit

The unit can be mounted to a wall surface.  Please follow below steps:

  1. Turn off the unit before mounting.
  2. Select an appropriate mounting location.  Use a horizontal line and the length of the line must be 205 mm and mark the two ends of the wall. (see Fig.4)
  3. Drill two marks by screws.
  4. Mount the unit by positioning the key-hole slots over the mounting screw (see Fig.5 )


    Power On/Off

    Once the inverter has been properly installed, press the power switch to turn on the unit. The unit will work automatically in line mode or inverter mode according to input utility power’s  status. When pressing the power switch again, the unit will be turned off.  The inverter LCD displays the following:

    1. Input voltage

    2. Output voltage

    3. AC mode (machine in line mode, this LCD symbol lights )

    4. Battery mode (when AC input voltage is abnormal, this LCD symbol lights)

    5. Battery level (Battery capability)

    6. Low battery (when battery voltage is low, this LCD symbol flashes)

    7. Load level (Lod percent)

    8. Overload (when there is output overloading,  this LCD symbol flashes)

    9. Fault mode (this LCD symbol will light when the inverter is in fault mode, such as output shorted, overload)

Operation  Mode Selector

a). “”UPS “”: setting for the conventional electrical appliance.

If you select this mode, the unit’s input utility range is narrow.If the utility is higher or lower than this range, the unit will transfer to battery mode automatically. And you can connect the general home appliances when you select this operation mode.

b). “”INV “”: se_tting for energy saving.

If you select this mode, the unit’s input utility range is wide.  If the utility is higher or lower than this range, the unit will transfer to inverter mode automatically.  So, you can connect lamp and fan load.

Why you need an inverter?

Power outages are common in Nigeria and a good inverter and battery can be priceless during such events.  It can be very frustrating when you are watching your favourite program on TV and everything suddenly goes black.  With an inverter and battery, you can have uninterrupted power supply without the noise and pollution of a generator.

But how do you choose the right ones?  Which factors are important to consider when buying an Inverter and battery.

There are literally thousands of branded inverters and batteries on the Nigerian market.  If you choose an inverter and battery with the wrong specification for your Use Case, you could end up with a very expensive mess.

Inverter Type

There is two main type of inverters available on the market.  Modified Sine Wave and Pure Sine Wave.  If you wish to power small household appliances like lights, TV,s and fans. Modified Sine Wave inverters are affordable and have high efficiency. They will provide you with power comparable (but not identical) to what you get from NEPA.

If you would like to run larger appliances like a fridge, freezer, AC or medical equipment you should buy a Pure Sine Wave inverter.  They are ideal for motor startups,  make little or no noise  and give power quality equivalent to what you get from NEPA, however, Pure Sine Wave inverter can cost twice as much as an equivalent Modified Sine Wave Inverter

Inverter Size

To choose the right inverter size for your needs, calculate the total wattage of all the electrical appliances you would like to run on the inverter.  This can be achieved by checking the power rating label found on each appliance and adding up the total wattage. You can find out the wattage of your appliances by checking the markings on them or by reading the user manuals.  If you wish to keep your total cost down,  it is advisable to run only your essential appliances on the inverter.  The following is an example:

We recommend that you buy an inverter twice the size of your total energy requirements so that you have extra capacity and do not run the risk of overloading your inverter.

Battery Bank

Batteries are required to store energy from NEPA, Generator or a renewable energy source e.g solar panels. Batteries are an essential part of any power backup system and the performance and longevity of your inverter system will largely be dependent on the quality of the batteries you use.

The minimum required size of your battery bank will be determined by the voltage requirements of your inverter.  A 12-volt inverter, for example, requires 12 volts and will work if you connect it to a single 12v battery.  A 24-volt inverter will require 24 volts, which you can achieve by connecting two 12 volt batteries in series.

Think of a battery like a bucket of energy.  It will only hold a certain amount and no amount of praying and hoping will make hold more. Battery capacities are typically given in Ampere Hour (AH), specifically indicating the inverter’s current supply rate per hour of operation, for instance, a 200 AH inverter battery can deliver 200AH of current for every 60 minutes of operations.

The most common inverter  battery capacities available in Nigeria are 12v 100AH and 200AH.

The minimum required battery bank size may or may not be enough to meet your needs.  You can determine the correct sizing for your home by using the following formula.

Amp rating of battery x inverter voltage (assuming 80% efficiency )  load wattage.


200ah (Amp rating of battery)  x 24v  (Voltage of inverter)   assuming 80% efficiency and 80% depth of discharge  / 385 watts (Load) = approximately 7  hours.

The above result is based on a continuous 385 watts load, in reality, the backup time could be increased significantly by managing the number of appliances you have on at any given time.  For example, you may decide to only turn on your TV, when your favorite programs are on.

Adopting such a disciplined approach  could save you a substantial amount of money.   You can  start with a small  battery bank and add more batteries later on if your requirements change.  We do not charge for installation, so long as you purchase your system components from

Battery Type

Even though inverters are run by lead acid batteries, those typically used in vehicles are not compatible with inverters because those types of batteries are built for delivering exceptionally high currents for short spans of time, for example, starting the ignitions of vehicles.

Dry Cell Deep Cycle Inverter batteries are convenient for inverter system use because they require absolutely no maintenance.  These types of batteries are perfect for home or-or small office applications where regular battery maintenance is not feasible. Unlike Wet Cell Deep Cycle batteries they can be left sitting around for long periods without use, with no detriment to performance.

Tubular Wet Cell Deep Cycle batteries come equipped with sophisticated designs, which ensure excellent electrical efficiency and increased lifespan.  They can often go on working for 10 years or more, however, they can be very expensive to maintain and should not be left sitting around for long periods of time without use.  Like the muscles of the body, they need regular use to maintain optimal performance.

They come with caps which you will have to remove every 3 to 6 months to add distilled water and they generate hydrogen gas while charging which needs to be well ventilated outside.

Inverter Battery Brands

There are a lot of inverter battery brands available on the Nigerian market. The problem is that the majority of these batteries are relatively low-quality compared to those from dedicated inverter battery manufacturers. This is why most experts recommend investing in a battery from reputable manufacturers such as Mercury.

1. Use new Deep Cycle Batteries

2. Choose the right size Inverter for your needs
