How luxury residential estate is planning to build its own solar power plant.
In a move that is set to make it one of the most sustainable luxury estates in the world, Val de Vie Estate has announced plans to build its own solar power plant. The state-of-the-art facility will have 3,600 photovoltaic (PV) modules and will generate 1 MV of electricity, making it completely self-sufficient in terms of energy requirements.
The proposed solar pv power plant will have a footprint size of 15,475 square meters (1.5 hectares). The power plant will also include fourteen 100 kW string inverters with sensor modules, surge protection, IO modules, and harmonic filters. Underground low- and medium-voltage cables will be installed with draw wires at each inverter and LV kiosk.
Private Val de Vie electricity network
All the power generated will be fed into the private Val de Vie electricity network. None will be exported to Drakenstein Kliprug substation or to any Eskom network. Protection, control, and communication will be installed at the private Val de Vie switching station, which includes underground cables and a mini-substation.
In the event that the solar power plant cannot generate electricity due to bad weather or maintenance, electrical supply will be obtained from the grid.
This is a huge step forward for the estate, which is home to a number of high-end neighborhoods, including the Polo Village, the Gentleman’s Estate, Pearl Valley, the River Club, the Reserve, and the Vines. The new solar power plant will not only provide clean energy for all these homes but will also help to reduce the estate’s carbon footprint significantly.
Environmental impact assessment (EIA)
The construction of solar power plant is still in the early stages, with an environmental impact assessment (EIA) process currently underway. This is an exciting development for Val de Vie Estate and one that is sure to set a precedent for other luxury estates around the world.
